O sodobnem privatiziranju vojne ipd.

'North of' by Marie-Helene Bertino

THERE ARE AMERICAN FLAGS on school windows, on cars, on porch swings; it is the year I bring Bob Dylan home for Thanksgiving.

We park in front of my mom’s house, my mom who has been waiting for us at the door, probably since dawn. Her hello carries over the lawn. Bob Dylan opens the car door, stretches one leg and then the other. He wears a black leather coat, and has spent the entire ride from New York trying to remember the name of a guitarist he played with in Memphis. I pull our bags from the trunk.

“You always pack too much,” I say.

Vedran Husić, 'Deathwinked'

I hear, the axe has bloomed,
I hear, the place is not nameable,
I hear, they call life
our only refuge.

Paul Celan, I Hear, the axe has bloomed
We called sniper alley the alley of wolves. We were young and boys and had nicknames for everything, first of all the girls. There was the Nanny, the Epilogue, and the Soulcrusher. We thought these nicknames very clever, breathless with truth. We were thirteen and easily excited. To be killed by a sniper meant to be deathwinked, a verb. I came up with that. I had a minimum understanding of poetry, a maximum amount of fear.

»I've found a lot more things,« her cousin said to her the day after the second funeral: »they're up in the room – but they're things I wish you'd look at.«

Sam Allingham, "Bar Joke, Arizona"

A man walks into a bar. He walks over to the bartender and says, “Can I get a drink?”

The bartender looks up from the fan he‘s been tinkering with and says, “Sure. What would you like?”

“Well,” the man says. “The problem is, I don’t have any money.”

“I see,” the bartender says.

“But I do have…”

The man then breaks off, hesitates, and begins again.

“I have… oh… wait… hold on…”

The bartender shakes his head and starts washing some glasses.

Guy de Maupassant, "The necklace"

She was one of those pretty and charming girls who are sometimes, as if by a mistake or destiny, born in a family of clerks. She had no dowry, no expectations, no means of being known, understood, loved, wedded by any rich and distinguished man; and she herself be married to a little clerk at the Ministry of Public Instruction.

Graham Greene, "Brother"

The Communists were the first to appear. They walked quickly, a group about a dozen, up the boulevard which runs from Combat to Menilmontant; a young man and a girl lagged a little way behind because the man's leg was hopeless, as if they were trying to catch a train which they knew already in their hearts they were too late to catch.

Meg Campbell, “Just saying you love me doesn’t make it so”

I sat waiting in the deepening November twilight for Jack’s return. Embarrassingly enough, it was the high spot of my day. Today the wait seemed longer than usual, and I shifted impatiently on the car seat, trying to push my mind ahead to Jack’s arrival. But it kept slithering relentlessly back to Mother’s letter.

Carson McCullers, "A tree, a rock, a cloud"

It was that morning, and still very dark. When the boy reached the streetcar café he had almost finished his route and he went in for a cup of coffee. The place was an all-night café owned by a bitter and stingy man called Leo. After the raw, empty street, the café seemed friendly and bright: along the counter there were a couple of soldiers, three spinners from the cotton mill, and in a corner a man who sat hunched over with his nose and half his face down in a beer mug. The boy wore a helmet such as aviators wear. When he went into the café he unbuckled the chin strap and raised the right flap up over his pink little ear; often as he drank his coffee someone would speak to him in a friendly way. But this morning Leo did not look into his face and none of the man were talking. He paid and was leaving the café when a voice called out to him:

Caroline Gordon, "The last day in the field"

That was the fall when the leaves stayed green so long. We had a drouth in August and the ponds everywhere were dry and the watercourse shrunken. Then in September heavy rains came. Things greened up. It looked like winter was never coming.
